What Is a Demo Account in Forex Trading?
Short answer: A demo account is a practice account funded with virtual money. You trade on the broker’s platform at market prices, but nothing you win or lose is real. It is the right place to learn the platform and test a plan, and it is a poor guide to how you will behave with real money at stake.

What a demo account gives you
You open it with a broker, usually by registering with an email address, and pick a virtual balance. The platform then works much like a live one: you open charts (see how to read a forex chart), place market and pending orders, set a stop loss and watch the profit and loss change.
Typical uses:
- Learning where the buttons are on MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or a broker’s own app.
- Practising order types until placing them is routine.
- Checking how a lot size changes the value of a pip.
- Testing a written trading plan before any money is involved.
How brokers describe their demos
Terms are set by each broker, so check the demo page before you open one. Two examples from our reviews:
| Broker | Demo terms we reported |
|---|---|
| Vantage | Standard STP, Raw ECN and Perpetual demos, with virtual balances from $1,000 to $100,000 (review) |
| AvaTrade | No time limit, up to $100,000 in virtual funds, on MT4, MT5, WebTrader and the app (review) |
Other brokers cap how long a demo stays open or limit the balance. A demo is not proof of anything about the live service.
Where a demo differs from a live account
| Area | Demo | Live |
|---|---|---|
| Money at risk | None | Your own funds |
| Order fills | Simulated | Matched with real liquidity |
| Slippage | Often missing or mild | Can be large in fast markets |
| Spreads | May look steadier | Can widen at news and rollover |
| Emotions | Low | High |
Because fills are simulated, a demo can make a strategy look smoother than it will be. A scalping method that works on a demo with a tight, constant spread may lose its edge when the live spread widens.
A worked example of the emotion gap
Say you practise risking 1% of a $10,000 virtual balance, which is $100 per trade. That feels easy. On a live $500 account, 1% is $5, so the sizes are small, but many beginners raise the risk because the dollar amounts look too small to matter. A demo will not show you that habit. Our guide to forex position sizing gives the formula so the risk stays fixed whatever the balance.
How to use a demo well
- Write down your rules first: what you trade, when you enter, where the stop goes, how much you risk.
- Use a balance close to the amount you plan to deposit, not a round $100,000.
- Keep a trade log with the reason for each trade and the result in pips.
- Place trades at times when spreads are normal and at times when they are not, to see the difference.
- Review the log after a set number of trades, such as 50, and look at whether you followed your own rules.
When to move to a live account
A demo has done its job when you can use the platform without mistakes and follow your plan trade after trade. Move to a small live account then, with leverage set low and risk per trade fixed. Read forex risk management first, and compare brokers using our method for choosing a forex broker. Check the withdrawal rules before the first deposit too. Our EBC and Titan FX withdrawal guides show the fees, limits, processing times and same-method rules to look for.
Do not expect the same results. Expect the same rules.
Bottom line
A demo account teaches the platform and lets you test a plan without risk, but its fills, spreads and emotions are not the same as a live account. Use a realistic balance, log every trade and move to a small live account only when you follow your rules consistently. Only trade with money you can afford to lose. CFDs are complex, high-risk instruments.
Frequently asked questions
What is a demo account in forex?
A demo account is a practice account with virtual money. It uses a platform like the live one, so you can place orders and see profit and loss without risking your own funds.
Is a forex demo account free?
Brokers usually offer demo accounts without a deposit, but terms differ. Some limit how long a demo stays active or ask you to register, so read the broker's demo page.
Do demo accounts use real prices?
Most show live or near-live quotes. Fills are simulated, so slippage, rejected orders and wider spreads in fast markets may not appear the way they would on a live account.
How long should I practise on a demo account?
There is no fixed number. A common aim is to place enough trades to follow a written plan consistently and to understand the platform, then move to a small live account.
Can you make real money on a demo account?
No. Profit and loss on a demo account are virtual and cannot be withdrawn. Brokers that run demo contests describe their own prize rules, which you should read in full.
Why do traders behave differently on a live account?
Real money brings fear and greed that virtual money does not. Position sizes, stop placement and willingness to hold a loss often change once the loss is real.
