Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Nothing on this site is financial advice.
Note for India: Vantage is not authorised by the Reserve Bank of India to offer forex trading to Indian residents and appears on the RBI Alert List of unauthorised platforms. Under FEMA, Indian residents may trade forex only in permitted currency pairs, through RBI-authorised persons, recognised Indian exchanges or RBI-authorised platforms. If you open an account with an offshore broker, you do so at your own risk. RBI Alert List

Short answer: Vantage’s Help Centre says every account type offers leverage from 100:1 to 500:1, with fixed leverage on some products. The stop out level is 20%, and the margin call level is given as 50%, though that article’s wording is unclear. The Premium Unlimited account is the exception: leverage up to 1:2,000,000,000 on forex and gold CFDs at low equity, and a 0% stop out. Negative balances are cleared automatically on eligible accounts, but you can still lose more than you deposit before that happens.

How much leverage does Vantage offer?
| Where | Leverage | Source |
|---|---|---|
| All account types | 100:1 to 500:1 | Leverage options |
| Certain products | Fixed leverage, set in the product specification | CFD leverage |
| Premium Unlimited | Unlimited up to $5,000 equity, down to 1:500 above $100,000 | Premium Unlimited |
Vantage describes two kinds of leverage. Account leverage is the ratio you choose for the whole account. Fixed leverage applies to specific products and ignores your account setting. You find it under “margin percentage” in the product’s specification.
Both pages are dated. The 100:1 to 500:1 article was last updated in September 2025, and the Premium Unlimited article in August 2026. Our Vantage review notes that Vantage’s marketing site advertises higher figures for some countries. We could not open that page again for this update, so we give no figure for it.
What leverage does to your margin
Vantage’s own example: with 1:500 leverage, a USD 1,000 deposit gives exposure of up to USD 500,000 (source). That is also the problem. At that size, a 0.1% price move against you is USD 500, which is half the account. This is our arithmetic, not a Vantage figure, and it ignores spreads and swaps.
For forex, Vantage gives the margin formula as contract size x lots x margin percentage / leverage (source). Doubling the leverage halves the margin a position needs. For other CFD modes the formula differs, and the Help Centre says some CFD margin does not depend on account leverage at all.
Leverage does not change how much a pip is worth. It only changes how large a position you can open. Use the lot size calculator to size from the amount you are willing to lose, and read what is leverage if the term is new.
Margin call and stop out
Both are measured with margin level, which Vantage defines as equity divided by used margin, times 100% (source).
| Level | Vantage figure | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Margin call | 50% (Premium Unlimited: 30%) | A warning to add funds or cut positions |
| Stop out | 20% on all platforms (Premium Unlimited: 0%) | Positions are closed automatically, largest loss first |
The stop out figure is stated plainly: “set at 20%”, closing positions “starting with the one that has the largest loss” (source). A worked example, using only those levels: if your open positions need USD 200 of margin, a margin call is at USD 100 of equity and stop out begins at USD 40.
A conflict on the margin call figure. The margin call article says a margin call “is a warning that your margin level is nearing the stop-out level, which is set at 50% by Vantage” (source). That sentence names 50% as the stop-out level, which contradicts the stop out article’s 20%. Two other pages give 20% for stop out, so we read 50% as the margin call level. The Premium Unlimited page confirms a separate 30% margin call figure. Confirm both numbers in your platform before you rely on them.
Vantage also says a margin call can arrive when your account looks above the threshold in volatile markets, because equity can drop quickly (source). With no free margin you cannot open new trades, and losses can then reach the stop out level (source). For the general mechanics, see margin call and stop out.
Premium Unlimited: leverage that depends on equity
| Account equity | Leverage |
|---|---|
| $0 to $5,000 | 1:Unlimited |
| $5,000.01 to $30,000 | 1:2000 |
| $30,000.01 to $100,000 | 1:1000 |
| $100,000.01 and above | 1:500 |
Vantage says leverage adjusts in real time as equity changes, and it caps it at 1:2,000,000,000 on forex and gold CFDs, “subject to dynamic adjustments, margin requirements, and market conditions”. The account lists a 30% margin call level, a 0% stop out level and a 20% swap discount (source).
A news period protection rule applies a temporary leverage limit to forex, gold, oil and index CFDs around major news events. Leverage is reduced 3 hours before market close for gold, silver, oil, forex, Nas100, SP500, DJ30 and US2000, and the Friday and Monday holiday rules add further windows. Only new positions opened in those windows are affected.
New accounts need at least 10 trades and a total of 3 lots within a year in forex, gold, oil or BTCUSD. Existing Premium clients are exempt. With a 0% stop out and unlimited leverage on small balances, this account suits experienced traders at most. See Vantage account types for how it compares.
Changing your leverage, and why Vantage changes it for you
You can change leverage once the account is funded. In the client portal, go to Account, then Live account, click the gear icon and select change leverage. In the Vantage app it sits under trade settings (source). If a request is still under review, the option is temporarily unavailable (source).
Vantage can also adjust it without your request, for four reasons it lists (source):
- Account risk management, based on trading activity or equity.
- Regulatory requirements in certain jurisdictions or account types.
- The instrument and market volatility.
- Your account type or status.
Negative balance: what the Help Centre says
Vantage says it is possible to lose more than your balance. A stop out at 20% “does not guarantee that your account won’t fall into a negative balance”, because weekend and holiday gaps can fill orders at unfavourable prices (source). The same page says you will not be liable for a negative balance “due to our protection measures”.
The mechanism is an automatic clearing process. Eligible accounts are cleared when equity is below credit, and manual resets are no longer offered. PAMM and MAM accounts are excluded, and Vantage copy trading accounts clear only if nobody is actively copying them (source). The Help Centre does not define “eligible” in these pages.
Which Vantage entity you trade with
Leverage limits depend on the regulator behind your account. Vantage’s Help Centre says leverage may change because “certain jurisdictions or account types have leverage limits set by regulatory authorities”. Clients of the global website sign with Vantage Global Limited, regulated in Vanuatu. Our Is Vantage legit? page, which cites Vantage’s regulation page, explains what that means for leverage limits and negative balance protection. We could not open that regulation page again for this update. We did not re-open the ASIC or FCA rules for this article, so we state no regulator cap.
Vantage also says it does not serve residents of certain jurisdictions, naming Canada, China, Singapore and the United States (source).
How to avoid a stop out
Vantage’s list is plain: keep your balance above the required margin, use stop-loss orders, watch your margin level, avoid trading through major news, and reduce position sizes (source). It also says higher leverage reduces the margin needed but raises the risk of losing your capital when positions are large (source). Our guide to position sizing shows how to set size from a stop distance.
India: Vantage is named on the RBI Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms (updated 19 November 2025). Under FEMA, Indian residents may trade forex only in permitted currency pairs through RBI-authorised persons, recognised Indian exchanges or RBI-authorised platforms. If you are in India, weigh this legal risk before opening an account.
Bottom line
Vantage gives 100:1 to 500:1 on its account types, a 20% stop out and, per its Help Centre text, a 50% margin call. Premium Unlimited goes far beyond that and removes the stop out, so it carries the most risk. Use the lowest leverage that lets you place your planned trade, keep a stop loss on every position and only deposit money you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum leverage at Vantage?
The Help Centre says all account types offer leverage from 100:1 to 500:1, and some products have fixed leverage. The Premium Unlimited account is the exception: up to 1:2,000,000,000 on forex and gold CFDs, depending on equity.
What is the Vantage stop out level?
20% on all trading platforms, according to the Help Centre. At or below that margin level Vantage starts closing positions, beginning with the largest loss. Premium Unlimited has a 0% stop out level.
What is the Vantage margin call level?
The Help Centre calls a margin call a warning that margin level is nearing stop out, and its text gives 50%. Premium Unlimited is listed at 30%. The wording of the 50% article is unclear, so check the figure in your own platform.
How do I change my Vantage leverage?
Once the account is funded, open Account, then Live account in the client portal, click the gear icon, choose change leverage and save. The Vantage app has a trade settings icon with a leverage option. You cannot submit a new request while one is under review.
Why did Vantage change my leverage?
The Help Centre lists four reasons: account risk management, regulatory requirements, the product or market conditions, and your account type or status. Premium Unlimited also lowers leverage around major news and market holidays.
Can I lose more than my deposit with Vantage?
Yes, it is possible. The Help Centre says gaps over weekends or holidays can cause stop outs at unfavourable prices and a negative balance. It also says eligible accounts have negative balances cleared automatically.
Does higher leverage make a Vantage account riskier?
Yes. Higher leverage lowers the margin each position needs, so you can open larger positions with the same deposit. A small price move then changes your equity by a larger share.
