Forex Pip Value: What One Pip Is Worth in Money

By · Updated · How we review

Short answer: Pip value is what a one-pip move is worth on your position in your account currency. On 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD with a US dollar account it is $10. On other pairs, or with another account currency, you convert the result at the current exchange rate, so the number changes.

Forex pip value: $10 per pip on 1 lot of EUR/USD, about $6.67 on USD/JPY at 150.00, about 9.22 euros for a euro account on EUR/USD at 1.0850

The formula

Pip value in the quote currency is:

pip size x trade size in units

If the quote currency is also your account currency, that is the answer. If it is not, divide or multiply by the exchange rate to convert it. For the basics of what a pip is and where the decimal point sits, read what is a pip.

Standard lot sizes

A lot is a fixed number of units of the base currency. See what is a lot if the terms are new.

Lot Units Pip value on EUR/USD (USD account)
Standard (1.00) 100,000 $10
Mini (0.10) 10,000 $1
Micro (0.01) 1,000 $0.10

These figures use the 100,000-unit standard lot, which is the usual convention for currency pairs. Always confirm the contract size for the instrument on your own platform.

Example 1: quote currency is your account currency

EUR/USD, 1 standard lot, US dollar account.

0.0001 x 100,000 = $10 per pip. The price does not matter here, because the quote currency is the dollar already.

Example 2: USD/JPY

The pip on yen pairs is 0.01. For 1 standard lot:

0.01 x 100,000 = 1,000 yen per pip.

That must be converted to dollars. At USD/JPY of 150.00, 1,000 yen divided by 150.00 is about $6.67. If USD/JPY rises to 155.00, the same pip is worth about $6.45. The pip value falls as the dollar buys more yen.

Example 3: a cross pair

EUR/GBP, 1 standard lot, US dollar account. The pip value in the quote currency is 0.0001 x 100,000 = £10. To get dollars, multiply by GBP/USD. At 1.2700 that is about $12.70.

Example 4: a different account currency

A euro account trading EUR/USD, 1 standard lot. The pip value is $10, which must be converted to euros. At EUR/USD of 1.0850, $10 divided by 1.0850 is about 9.22 euros.

All four figures are illustrations at the stated prices. Live prices change them, and your platform shows the current value. The pip calculator does the conversion for any pair.

Pip value by pair and lot size (US dollar account)

Pair type Example 1 lot 0.1 lot 0.01 lot
USD is the quote currency EUR/USD, GBP/USD $10.00 $1.00 $0.10
USD is the base currency USD/CAD at 1.3600 about $7.35 about $0.74 about $0.07
Yen as quote currency USD/JPY at 150.00 about $6.67 about $0.67 about $0.07
Gold, 100 oz per lot, 0.1 pip XAU/USD $10.00 $1.00 $0.10
Gold, 100 oz per lot, 0.01 pip XAU/USD $1.00 $0.10 $0.01

USD/CAD: 0.0001 x 100,000 = 10 Canadian dollars, divided by 1.3600 is about $7.35. On GBP/JPY the pip is also 1,000 yen per lot, so the dollar value follows USD/JPY. Gold contract size and pip definition differ by platform, so these two rows hold only for a 100-ounce lot.

The same trade at three sizes

You buy EUR/USD at 1.0850, with a stop loss at 1.0820 (30 pips) and a target at 1.0910 (60 pips). Assume a spread of 1.2 pips.

Trade size Pip value Loss at stop Profit at target Spread cost
0.01 lot $0.10 $3 $6 $0.12
0.1 lot $1 $30 $60 $1.20
1 lot $10 $300 $600 $12

The pips are identical in each row and only the money changes. Losses and gains are calculated the same way, and these are arithmetic illustrations, not forecasts.

Margin is a different number

Pip value and margin are often mixed up. On 0.01 lot of EUR/USD at 1.0850 the position is worth about $1,085 and a pip is $0.10. The margin held depends on leverage: about $36.17 at 30:1 and about $2.17 at 500:1, while the pip value stays at $0.10.

Pip value and leverage

Leverage does not change the pip value. A 0.10 lot is $1 per pip on EUR/USD with a dollar account, at 30:1 or at 500:1. Leverage affects how much margin the broker holds against the position. See what is leverage and what is margin.

Turning pip value into a risk limit

Pip value is the link between a stop loss in pips and a loss in money.

  1. Decide how much money you accept losing, for example $50.
  2. Decide the stop distance from the chart, for example 25 pips.
  3. Divide: $50 divided by 25 pips is $2 per pip.
  4. On EUR/USD with a dollar account, $2 per pip is a 0.20 lot.

The same $50 with a 50-pip stop gives $1 per pip, a 0.10 lot. The lot size calculator does the sum, and forex position sizing explains the method in full.

Where pip values go wrong

  • Mixing pips and points. One pip is usually 10 points on platforms that quote a fifth decimal. A field that asks for points will treat 20 as 2 pips.
  • Assuming $10 for every pair. That figure belongs to pairs quoted in dollars, with 100,000 units, on a dollar account.
  • Ignoring spread. A 1.2-pip spread on 1 lot of EUR/USD costs about $12 at $10 a pip, as soon as the trade opens. See what is a spread.
  • Using another instrument’s rule. Gold, indices and oil have their own contract sizes. Check the specification table.

Pip value on a trade you already hold

Your platform shows profit and loss in money, and you can check pip value from it. If a 0.50 lot on EUR/USD moves 12 pips and the profit line changes by about $60, the pip value is $5 per pip, as expected (0.50 x $10). When the numbers do not match, the usual cause is the spread, a different contract size, or an account currency that differs from the quote currency.

Do this check once on a demo account for each pair you plan to trade. It takes a minute and catches a wrong assumption before it costs real money.

Bottom line

Multiply pip size by trade size, then convert to your account currency. The result tells you what a stop loss of a given length can cost, and that is the number that matters before you click buy or sell. Pip values move with exchange rates, so recheck on your platform. Only risk money you can afford to lose, because CFDs are complex, high-risk instruments.

Frequently asked questions

What is pip value in forex?

Pip value is the amount of money one pip of price movement is worth on your position, in your account currency. It depends on the pair, the lot size and the exchange rate.

How do you calculate pip value?

Multiply the pip size by the trade size in units to get the value in the quote currency, then convert it to your account currency. For 1 standard lot of EUR/USD that is 0.0001 x 100,000 = $10.

Why is the pip value on USD/JPY not $10?

The pip is 0.01 on yen pairs, so one pip on 100,000 units is 1,000 yen. That has to be converted to dollars at the current USD/JPY rate. At 150.00 it is about $6.67.

Does leverage change pip value?

No. Pip value depends on trade size, not on leverage. Leverage changes how much margin you need to hold the position.

Does pip value change during the day?

On pairs where the quote currency is not your account currency, yes. The conversion rate moves, so the pip value moves with it, though usually by small amounts.

How do I find the pip value on gold?

Check the contract specifications on your platform. Contract size and the definition of a gold pip differ between brokers, so a rule from another broker may be wrong.
