Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Nothing on this site is financial advice.

Short answer: VT Markets’ help centre sets the default leverage at 500:1, usually adjustable between 100:1 and 500:1, and says it can reach 2000:1 in eligible countries. By instrument, forex and gold go up to 1000:1, oil and indices 500:1, silver 100:1 and US share CFDs 20:1 or 33:1. Leverage is cut temporarily around major news and market closes. The help centre gives a 50% margin call and a 20% stop out, but the Client Agreement allows closing positions from 50%.

VT Markets leverage 2026: 500:1 default, up to 2000:1 by region, 1000:1 on forex and gold, 50% margin call and 20% stop out

What is VT Markets’ maximum leverage?

VT Markets’ own pages give four different ceilings:

Where What it says
Help centre, leverage range Default 500:1, typically adjustable 100:1 to 500:1, up to 2000:1 in eligible countries (source)
Help centre, demo vs live table Live maximum 2000, “depending on registration country” (source)
Accounts overview Standard STP, RAW ECN and swap-free: up to 1000:1 (source)
Help centre, lot size article Standard accounts “up to 500:1” (source)

None of these is necessarily wrong: the 2000:1 figure is an account-level maximum for some regions, while each instrument has its own cap. We found no table showing which countries qualify for 2000:1, and no leverage table by legal entity. Demo accounts go up to 500:1 only. The figure that counts is the one offered in your client portal.

Clause 2.1(g) of the Client Agreement also lets VT Markets “determine, vary, or modify the leverage configuration, margin requirements, or other trading parameters” of any account at its sole discretion (source).

Leverage by instrument

Even on a 2000:1 account, each product is capped. The help centre lists (source):

Instrument Maximum leverage (help centre wording)
Forex Up to 1000:1
Gold (XAUUSD) Up to 1000:1
Oil Up to 500:1
Indices Up to 500:1
Silver (XAGUSD) Fixed 100:1
Energy products Fixed 20:1
Soft commodities Fixed 20:1
US share CFDs Fixed 20:1 or 33:1, may change around earnings releases

“Fixed” suggests that changing your account leverage does not change that product’s margin. The help centre describes two margin types: floating leverage (margin divided by your account leverage) and fixed leverage (a set margin percentage) (source). The exact type is shown in each symbol’s specification in MT4/MT5.

How much margin a trade needs

For forex, margin = contract size × lots ÷ leverage (for CFDs, multiply by the price too). The help centre’s own example: one standard lot of EURUSD ($100,000) at 500:1 needs $200 of margin.

Illustrative margin for one standard lot of EURUSD (contract value taken as $100,000):

Account leverage Margin needed
100:1 $1,000
500:1 $200
1000:1 $100

Higher leverage only lowers the margin. It does not change what each pip is worth: one standard lot of EURUSD still gains or loses about $10 per pip. What it changes is how large a position your balance allows, and that is where accounts get wiped out. Learn the basics in what is leverage in forex.

Dynamic leverage: temporary caps around news and closes

VT Markets temporarily lowers maximum leverage when markets are most likely to jump (when, how much):

When it applies:

  • Major economic news (for example US CPI, NFP, FOMC, or oil inventories): from 15 minutes before to 5 minutes after the release
  • Fridays: the 3 hours before market close
  • Monday to Thursday: the 30 minutes before close
  • Mondays: the first 30 minutes after the open

VT Markets publishes a weekly schedule on its notifications page.

Temporary caps:

Product Dynamic leverage cap
Forex and gold 200:1
Silver 50:1
Oil 20:1
Indices 50:1
Commodities (incl. platinum and palladium) Shown as “1:05” in the help centre

The help centre’s own examples show the effect. Gold, 1 lot at an assumed $3,000: margin is $300 at 1000:1 but $1,500 during the news window at 200:1. US oil, 1 lot at an assumed $80, one hour before Friday’s close: $160 at 500:1 but $4,000 at the 20:1 cap. The help centre says the caps mainly affect the margin for new trades opened in the window. If your leverage is already below the cap, nothing changes.

Margin call and stop out

Margin level = equity ÷ used margin × 100 (source). VT Markets’ sources describe the thresholds differently:

Source Margin call Forced closing
Help centre 50% (source) 20% stop out on STP and ECN (source)
Client Agreement, clause 11 “Margin call mode” may start below 100% VT Markets may start closing positions at 50%, most unprofitable first
Key Facts Summary Not stated Positions may be liquidated without prior notice at the liquidation level for your account

At stop out, the help centre says the system closes the positions with the largest losses first, until the margin level is back above 20% (source). In a fast market the closing price can be worse than the level, so stop outs can land below 20%.

Illustrative example. A $1,000 account opens 1 standard lot of EURUSD at 500:1, using $200 of margin. The margin level starts at 500%.

Event Equity Approx. adverse move
Margin level 100% (Client Agreement margin call mode) $200 80 pips
Margin level 50% (help centre margin call; Client Agreement may close) $100 90 pips
Margin level 20% (help centre stop out) $40 96 pips

A 90-pip move in EURUSD is not unusual over a few days. The problem is not the 500:1 setting but the 1-lot position on a $1,000 balance. The same trade at 0.10 lot would lose about $90 over the same move. Size the position first with our lot size calculator.

How to change your leverage

According to the help centre (source):

  1. Log in to the client portal and open Account.
  2. Select the trading account, click the gear icon and choose Change Leverage.
  3. Pick the ratio and submit. In the app: Trades → settings icon → leverage tier.

The request is rejected while you have open trades. A balance above certain limits, or taking part in a credit bonus promotion, may stop you from moving to higher leverage (source).

Negative balance protection: three versions

  • Help centre: negative balances are reset to zero automatically every 3 minutes, with a manual reset in the portal if a balance stays negative for over an hour (source). A credit bonus may be removed on reset.
  • Another help centre article: “certain accounts may be eligible”, after an internal review, depending on the entity holding your account (source).
  • Client Agreement (clause 11): VT Markets “may” credit a negative balance at its discretion, for Private Clients only, and not in abnormal market conditions. The Key Facts Summary says that if your account goes negative, you are required to fund it back to zero (source).

Assume the contract wording applies. Lower leverage and smaller positions are your real protection, especially over weekends.

Who holds your account, and where it is available

Leverage of 500:1 and above is offered through VT Markets Limited, Mauritius (FSC licence GB23202269, per VT Markets’ documents). There is no compensation scheme like the UK FSCS for this entity, and several regulators have published warnings about the broker; see is VT Markets legit? Tier-1 retail regulators cap leverage far lower, which is one reason offshore entities can offer these ratios.

India: VT Markets’ own website footer names India as a restricted jurisdiction, and it is named on the RBI Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms (entry 41, updated 19 November 2025). Under FEMA, Indian residents may trade forex only in permitted currency pairs through RBI-authorised persons, recognised Indian exchanges or RBI-authorised platforms. Weigh that legal risk before opening an account.

Bottom line

VT Markets lets you choose very high leverage, 500:1 by default and up to 2000:1 in some regions, but each instrument has its own cap and dynamic leverage cuts it around news and closes. Plan for the stricter 50% close-out wording in the Client Agreement, not just the help centre’s 20% stop out, and do not count on negative balance protection. Pick a leverage you will not be tempted to max out, size every trade from what you can afford to lose, and keep money you need out of the account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum leverage at VT Markets?

The help centre says the default is 500:1 and that leverage can reach 2000:1 in eligible countries. By instrument, forex and gold go up to 1000:1. The accounts overview quotes up to 1000:1, so the figure you can pick depends on your region and account.

What is VT Markets' leverage on gold?

Up to 1000:1 on XAUUSD according to the help centre. During major news and around market open and close, dynamic leverage can cap gold at 200:1, which raises the margin needed for new trades.

What are VT Markets' margin call and stop out levels?

The help centre gives a 50% margin call and a 20% stop out on STP and ECN accounts. The Client Agreement says margin call mode may start below 100% and that VT Markets may begin closing positions at 50%, so plan for the stricter level.

How do I change my leverage at VT Markets?

In the client portal, open Account, pick the trading account, click the gear icon and choose Change Leverage, or use the settings in the VT Markets app. You must close all open trades first, and a high balance or a credit bonus can stop you from choosing higher leverage.

What is dynamic leverage at VT Markets?

A temporary cap on leverage during volatile periods: from 15 minutes before to 5 minutes after major news, in the 3 hours before Friday's close, the 30 minutes before the close on Monday to Thursday, and the first 30 minutes after Monday's open.

Can I lose more than my deposit with VT Markets?

It is possible. The help centre says negative balances are reset to zero automatically, but the Client Agreement makes this discretionary and limits it to Private Clients, and the Key Facts Summary says you must fund a negative balance.
